The BBC Studios in-house events team comprises 12 event professionals working within the BBC Studios wider communications team. Headed up by Sally Brookes, their breadth of experience ranges from in-house, to agency, to supplier-side, and from embassies to political parties to cruise ships. This diverse experience is underpins the strength and skillset of the team. Teamwork, innovation, process and a commitment to fun are at the heart of how they operate.
BBC Studios is a commercial subsidiary of the BBC active across television production, content sales, channels and ancillaries, with around 3,000 permanent staff throughout the UK and across the world. Its yearly event staples including the BBC Studios global sales gathering Showcase and the company’s profile at trade events alongside one-offs like secret photo shoots for presenter announcements, publicity stunts for products launches, World Tours and Royal Premieres. They are trusted and respected by the business for their creativity, innovation, teamwork and passion for delivering world-class events. As a team, they strive to evolve, energise and enhance the event to meet business needs; as the media industry develops so does their focus and key customers. New content each year challenges the team to show innovation through new activations, creative, content sessions and evening events.
BBC Studios Launch
In April 2018, BBC Worldwide and BBC Studios Production merged to form BBC Studios. There was a need for the new company to come together, celebrate the union and hear the company strategy, future and values. The objective was to create an inclusive, world-class event for all staff across day and evening, to bring together the company culturally and creatively, in order to excite and engage staff globally (across 15 international offices, six UK regional offices and central London hub) on what they could now achieve together.
Aside from the challenge of the venues, locations and the short lead time, the only way this event could be delivered was through teamwork. A core planning team of five led the charge, building new relations with newly formed Internal Communication team and regional offices. With no time for recces it was vital the planning team delivered robust and detail plans when the team hit the ground.
The Team Culture
The culture of BBC Studios encourages strong partnerships and respect across teams across the business. Initiatives such as an annual Inclusion Summit, Woman at Work, Next Generation boards and talent Q&A’s bring together different parts and people from across the business to help build the agenda and take forward outcomes.
Everyone working in the company contributes to building a company culture that delivers creative and business success, and professional fulfilment. They are encouraged to collaborate and connect, be generous and help others succeed, and create environments where ideas are welcome.
As a team, this has led to their involvement in projects across the business not necessarily within their remit – input and helping develop Marketing campaigns for programme launches, idea generation for global brand re-launches – all of which ensures the team feel valued, trusted and respected.
As a team, they also run recruitment opportunities for other teams to participate in the company’s events calendar - they have reached out to staff to help support their events and give a valued opportunity to gain insight, experience and knowledge – from Staff running the MIPCOM stand or access to their flagship event working on Front of House and evening events.
The judges were super impressed with the 12 entries, commending all on their cutting-edge events; a clear representation of British events at their best. There was a clear trend for deep focus on rich content, the integration of social media, event formats that were more relaxed and creative, and the inclusion of strong analysis and data during post-event analysis to further improve their events.
The three front runners showcased a broad cross-section of event types, formats, budgets, and were smart in supplying attendee feedback, data analytics of performance, and in some cases revenue growth as a result of their events.
Whilst the Judges were impressed with the overall quality of all submissions, they were unanimous on the winner; whose score was considerably ahead of 2nd and 3rd place.
This winning entry had a beautiful creative tone to it, a humility that belied the global best in class nature of their events, and was commended for brilliant storytelling, rich creativity, and essentially being a trailblazer for best in class British events! Finally the judges were impressed with the sheer hard work that went into this submission, and duly recognised the great video work, supporting images, and volume of qualitative end-client feedback that praised the team on those events delivered.
